Friday, 7/1/17, we held a fun day for the team and their families. Everyone participated in games and contests to see who could back up all their talk with some action.
Greg Hata won the home run derby with just one home run. Ben Wells won the throwing contest nailing a garbage can at home plate from center field. Koleman Johns won the hot dog eating contest downing three grilled hot dogs and a rootbeer float. Ben didn't fair so well after his attempt. Don't ask. Ryan Rogers took top place in the apple pie eating contest beating out seven other contestants. Caleb Johnson stayed on his feet and was first across the finish line in the bat spin. Everyone had a great time.
The Flyers will resume play Friiday, 7/8/17, at 10AM against the Tri-City Atoms. See you there!
The Tri-cities Orioles snapped the Flyers' six game win streak, handing them their first loss of the season last Saturday, June 24th, taking game one 9-5.
The Flyers started off hot, scoring nearly all of their runs in the first inning. Tyler Johnson, Koleman Johns, and Sam Wells walked and were followed by Greg Hata, who hit a double to clear the bases. Antony Allen doubled allowing Hata to score before Oriole pitcher Robert Orozco settled in. Israel Hernandez got on base on an error to start off the second inning. Advancing on singles by Johnson and Johns, Hernandez scored the final Flyer run as they were not able to get that clutch hit the rest of the game and left eight runners on base.
The Orioles picked up runs in the first and third innings, but did their big damage in the fourth hitting through the order and scoring five runs on three walks, a couple of hits, and a hit-by-pitch. Trentin Thornhill scored the last two Oriole runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Thornhill, Spencer Taylor, and Jacob Ayala were 2-4.
The Flyers turned things around to take the win in game two 7-3. Wells was the first to cross the plate for the Flyers in inning one, making the most of his base-on-balls and later scoring on a single by Allen. Wells scored the next Flyer run in the third inning taking advantage of the struggling Orioles pitching staff who issued two walks and hit two batters to force in a run. The Flyers broke out in the fourth inning with two triples, a double, and two singles as they batted through the order allowing Jake Breshears, Wells, Hata, Allen, and Nathan Putas to score five more runs. Allen had a big day offensively going 3-6 with two doubles and is 7-12 with five doubles in the last two weeks. The man is in the zone!
Koleman Johns turned in a great performance in game two allowing eight hits with 12 Ks. Johns turned up the heat in the late innings and was throwing smoke, striking out seven of the last 12 batters. In the last three games, Johns has allowed 10 hits and struck out 37 batters. Pitzer and Price were the only two Orioles to score in game two, but several had a good day at the plate including Price 3-4 and Thornhill 2-3.
The Flyers will resume play on Saturday, July 8th, at 10AM against the Atoms from the Tri-Cities.
The Northwest Flyers Baseball Club hosted the Yakima Mariners for two games Saturday afternoon. The Mariners are the surviving team from the local Mexican Baseball League and have faced-off against the Flyers many times over the last twenty years. Saturday's play was some of the best we've seen from this veteran team.
Koleman Johns had a great pitching performance throwing a one-hitter with eight Ks and allowing just one run in the opener. The Mariners' lone run came in the fourth inning when Rony Leiva hit a double to deep right to score Ramon.
The Flyers started the scoring in the bottom of the first as Tyler Johnson and Sam Wells singled followed by Johns who helped his own cause with a single that scored two runs.
Johnson walked and Ben Wells and Sam Wells singled in the third followed by Antony Allen who drove one down the left field line to clear the bases for the Flyers' next three runs.
Allen struck again in the fifth with a double scoring two more runs. Allen finished the game with five RBI.
In the nightcap, it looked like the Flyers' five-game win streak was coming to an end. Mariner Toño hit a double off of Flyer pitcher Jaren Burton, later scoring the first M's run on a wild pitch in the first inning.
In inning two, Ruben singled, Israel got on base on a fielding error and Angel hit a single to score two runs. Angel scored on a fielder's choice allowing the Mariners to take a 4-0 lead. But, true to the character of this Flyer team that just doesn't know how to say quit, the Flyers battled to chip away at Yakima's lead.
In the bottom half of the second Burton singled, Allen followed with a single, and Jake Breshears knocked a single, picking up two RBI with the first two Flyer runs.
Burton settled down in the third allowing just three hits over the next four innings. Johnson started off a Flyer rally in the fifth with another single. Kelly Connor banged out a single, and Allen crushed his third double of the day tying the game.
Sam Wells led off with a single in the bottom of the sixth, Daniel Huston followed with his own single setting up the opportunity for Wells to score on a passed ball to take the lead.
Sam Wells was 3-4 and Tyler Johnson was 4-6 on the day. Antony Allen went 4-6 with three doubles and seven RBI earning him Offensive Player of the Day. Koleman Johns was Outstanding Pitcher of the Day for the second weekend, only allowing two hits with 24 Ks in 14 innings.
The Flyers are 6-0 going into their rematch next weekend with the very good Orioles team from the Tri-Cities Adult Mens Baseball League at 10:00AM, June 24th, at Riverside Christian Baseball Park.
The Northwest Flyers want to give a big shout out to one of their own this Saturday, June 17th, as they recognize Brian Alegria, Flyer Alum and faithful sponsor. Brian played for the Flyers during the early years, 1992-1994, when the club traveled around the State of Washington for many of its games. He recalls those summers with the Flyers as some of his favorite childhood memories. He was a starter for Eisenhower High School and a great second baseman for the Flyers.
Brian now has a beautiful family, is the CEO of CPC International Apple Company, and is on the Board of Directors of the Washington Apple Education Foundation helping to provide opportunities to the young people in our valley.
Join us at the game Saturday, starting at 3PM, to hear some great stories about Brian and the rest of the Flyers club from the early years and watch this year's very talented team take on the Yakima Mariners.
On Saturday, June 10th, the Northwest Flyers played a 10AM double-header against the Orioles, one of the top teams from the Tri-cities. In a great pitching and defensive battle waged by both teams, the Flyers came out on top with an exciting 2-1 win in the bottom of the eighth inning of the opener.
Koleman Johns, starting his second game of the season on the mound, teamed up with his good friend Ben Wells, making his first start behind the plate in five years. The result was a great three hit, 16 K performance.
Josh Beal had two hits for the Orioles in the first game and Eddie Reyes scored the only Oriole run in the top of the third inning. The Orioles' infielders kept the game close with some outstanding plays.
Johns scored in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Ben Wells to tie the game for the Flyers. The Flyers had a chance to win in the seventh, but couldn't get a clutch hit and left two runners on. In the eighth, Flyer Sam Wells hit a double to the 340 mark and advanced to third on a balk. Coach Wagner went to his old playbook calling for a suicide squeeze bunt. Ryan Rogers squared around but the ball was in the dirt and got passed the catcher allowing Sam Wells to score from third winning the game.
Defense was the big show by both teams in the night cap. Flyer third baseman, Kelly Conner, took several big time shots by the Orioles, making some of the best stops at third base this coach has seen in years. Ben Wells was on the bump in game two for his first start of the year and didn't disappoint anyone giving up five hits with four Ks.
In the third inning Ben Wells singled, followed by a blast into center for a stand up double by Sam Wells, to score his brother. The Flyers scored two more runs in the fourth as Tyler Johnson singled up the middle and Daunte Orona walked. Both scored when Franklin Keuhny hit a two run double for a 3-0 lead.
That's all the Flyers would need, but the Orioles never quit. Chris Pilzer singled in the top of the seventh and scored on a double by Kyler Ashley. After that the Flyers defense shut down any scoring threat to secure a 3-1 win and win their fourth game of the young season. The club is sitting on a four game win streak.

What an awesome day for baseball! The Northwest Flyers started the season off Saturday, June 3rd, with a win by forfeit in a five inning exhibition game against the Atoms from the Tri-cities Adult Baseball League. The game got off to a slow start as part of the Atoms team was delayed in getting to the field, but with the loan of three Flyers, it quickly turned into a great pitching duel.
Flyer player-coach Gregg Hata came off the D.L. after a year long break following an ACL injury to take the mound for the Atoms. Hata pitched a one-hitter, giving up one long double to deep left center to Antony Allen in the fourth, and holding the Flyers scoreless in five innings.
The Atoms scored their only run of the game on a hit by Jon Gonzales who later scored on a throwing error.
Koleman Johns, newcomer to the Northwest Flyers, pitched a great game after a year long lay-off, giving up three hits with seven Ks. Ben Wells was Defensive Player of game one at shortstop making two great plays!
The Flyers started seven new players in game one, including Johns, Wells, and five additional players, all who played together at Naches High School under Coach Walker. This new group mixed with our veteran players could become one of the strongest Flyers teams we've had.
Game two saw Flyers pitchers Jaren Burton and Taylor Johnson combine for a three-hitter with six Ks. Atom Rich Dempsey got the first hit in inning one but was left stranded. Ernie Marsh singled and scored in the third on a throwing error for the Atoms' only run of the game. Flyer Ari Diaz, on loan to the Atoms in game two, banged out a double in the sixth inning.
The Flyers' bats came to life in game two! Tyler Johnson opened the game with a single then scored the first run of the season on a line drive up the middle by Ryan Rogers. Allen drove in a run with his second hit of the day. Johnson and Rogers racked up their second hits in inning two along with another RBI for Rogers, and Ben Wells rang up his first hit of the season. Johns singled in the fourth inning then scored on Johnson's third single of the game. The Flyers won 5-1 with seven hits, seven strikeouts and one error.
It was a great day at the park. We would like to give special thanks for all of the help from our faithful Flyers family who make it possible to serve lunch to both teams and all the fans at the park. They set up, clean up, and even stay to feed the team after the field is put to bed at the end of the day. Thanks to Mrs. Hata, our score keeper, Dawn Hein, Maddison and Rylee, Jennine Frisbee, Sylena and Daniel, Dawn Orona, and Alice Gregg who helped serve over 80 meals today.
We also want to say a big thank you to Joe Mann of Ron's Coin and Collectibles for making the day special for all the kids who received free comic books and baseball cards.
Opening day is almost here! Join the Northwest Flyers Saturday, June 3rd, at Riverside Christian School as we kick off our 2017 season against the Atoms from the Tri-Cities Adult Baseball League.
